FESPO 2019 – mythical Mongolia comes to Zurich
27.09.2018 - Delve into the legendary empire of Genghis Khan: From 31 January to 3 February 2019, Mongolia will be a guest at FESPO Zurich. Visitors can find out first-hand what the featured country in 2019 has to offer at the largest holiday and travel fair in Switzerland.
The land of blue skies, steppes, nomads, Genghis Khan’s homeland ... Located between China and Russia, Mongolia has always been a source of fascination. Countless lakes, high mountains, and valleys, the Gobi Desert as well as prehistoric rock art, ruins of ancient temples and different cities are just waiting to be explored by visitors to Mongolia. Its history is just as exciting. During the times of Genghis Khan (approximately 1162–1227) and his grandson Kublai Khan (approximately 1215–1294), the Mongol Empire became the largest contiguous land empire in history, spanning half the world. Nowadays, around three million people live in this country of nomads, which is around 38 times the size of Switzerland. Genghis Khan is still highly revered among the Mongolian population – the famous emperor has been considered a symbol of the nation’s independence and a great idol for centuries now.
Mongolia – where tradition and myths are celebrated
Anyone traveling around Mongolia will soon notice that its nomads have many myths to tell. In these myths, the Mongol people pass on their life wisdom about topics such as the connection between mankind and nature from generation to generation. For the Mongolians, music is just as important as nature. With Khöömei (throat-singing) and Urtiin duu (long song), they express their view of the world and their distinctive culture. These melodies are even sung during their day-to-day tasks when herding the cattle. It is believed that when listening to Khöömei, you will see the high mountains of Mongolia unfold before your inner eyes and be able to hear the noises of the wind, water, and animals.
Mongolia at FESPO 2019
Visitors at FESPO 2019 can explore Mongolian traditions and nomadic culture from 31 January to 3 February 2019. Mongolia will feature as the guest country at the largest holiday and travel fair in Switzerland. “We are delighted to welcome Mongolia to FESPO Zurich. The fair has not featured a guest country from Asia for over 10 years now”, says Exhibition Director Stephan Amstad. “This nation and its people dazzle individual travelers just as much as families with small children. We are convinced that Mongolia was the right choice for FESPO Zurich’s guest country in 2019, and can hardly wait to explore Genghis Khan’s legendary empire at the end of January.”
